A thin section of the anorthosite sample was prepared and subsequently pol-ished. First the thin section was subjected to a 3 µm diamond polish for roughly 2 h, then for a half an hour using a 1/4 µm diamond polish. Finally, the sample was polished for 5 min by hand in colloidal silica. The final thickness was slightly

2018-04-27 · Small “clumps” of mafic minerals are in the hand specimen, but these are not represented in the thin sections. The composition of this rock is given in table 6. The age of this rock is 4440 million years. Olivine - Trace olivine Fo 65-67 is found with low-Ca pyroxene in “mafic clumps.”

A coarse grained igneous rock, anorthosite is characterized by being … The anorthosite-mangerite-charnockite-granite (AMCG) suite of rocks in North America is typically regarded as an association of two rock suites that are coeval but not comagmatic (Emslie et al., 1994; McLelland et al., 1994; Bickford et al., in press). The anorthosite suite is regarded as consisting of comagmatic anorthosite, leucogabbro, and gabbro, plus OGN and OAGN, while the mangerite suite anorthositic material. While cooling to form a solid body, parts of the interior melted again to form lava flows on the front side.

The locality contained ultramafics. Greenish olivine and black hornblende are absent, and the hardness of 5.5 also ruled out these minerals as well as the feldspars. Without large crystals, a blowpipe and chemicals for simple lab tests, or the ability to make thin sections, this is sometimes as far as the amateur can go.

You can find the explanation on the plagioclase feldspar page. Anorthite weathers quite readily, so it’s not terribly abundant on Earth. Unfortunately, these thin sections are thicker than the usual 30 micrometers, and in crossed polarizers (XPL) the plagioclase has colors of the upper first order, instead of the usual grey.

Gabbroic anorthosites occur in two localities in the canal section, in association Crude banding is seen in thin sections by the clusters of fine grained.

While cooling to form a solid body, parts of the interior melted again to form lava flows on the front side. The heat for the first melting comes from the terminal accretion; the heat for the second melting comes from the radioactive decay of K, U and Th in the interior. 11 clasts and studied thin sections of them. Lindstrom et al. (1984) studied 7 additional clasts, including magnesian anorthosite, troctolite and “dunite”.

Massif anorthosite • Layring is not found in massif anorthosite. • It contain plagioclase of An35-65 range. 14. ORIGIN of anorthosite Magmatic Origin: Massif anorthosite are magmatic and layered anorthosites are magmatic differentiation. • It has been derived from a basic magma either grabbroic or dioritic in compsition. 2013-10-27 · 2 thoughts on “ Anorthosite from Parc Roghadal, Isle of Harris (UK Grid Ref: NG 05571 84902) ” Michael Yeaman May 16, 2016 at 2:17 am.
